Remodeling business is expected to grow throughout 2016, according to a fourth-quarter member survey by the National Association of Remodeling Industry. Of the surveyed remodelers, 80 percent expect some level of growth in 2016. Industry surveys report demand for ash has weakened and prices are falling, while red oak 5/4 through 8/4 red oak is in oversupply. Chinese buyers are pressing for lower prices on red oak, while mills are trying to stabilize prices. White oak prices continue to rise, despite reduced stave demand adding to supply. According to government figures, sales of new homes decreased six percent in May from April to 551,000 units but gained 8.7 percent over the previous year. Inventories of new single-family homes for sale went up 1.2 percent in May from April to 244,000 units and jumped 16.2 percent compared to the previous year. One recent study recommended switching from wooden pallets to non-solid wood packaging to reduce the rate of accidental pest transportation.
